Packed tower can be used as a fractionation column for continuous or batch distillation. Packing size 3/2 or 2 inches generally give the same capacity with the sieve tray. Packed generally ranges from 1 to 2 feet. Packing smaller have lower capacity and this may not be used in large fields. Generally the pressure drop per equivalent theoretical plate is smaller than the sieve tray or bubble cap tray, it is advantageous for operation in a vacuum.

(McCabe, 1993)
For the packed tower, known as a term HETP, namely high-packed tower that produces the same composition changes with changes in the composition produced by two successive plate (distance between the same plate).
(Treyball, 1980)
