Preface
http://bit.ly/29owi4A
The current economic crisis is cutting the automotive sector to the quick. Public authorities worldwide are now faced with requests for providing loans and accepting guarantees and even for putting large automotive companies under state control. Assessing the long-term benefits of such help and weighing
the needs of different sectors against each other poses a major challenge for the national policies. Given the upcoming change of customer preferences and state regulations towards safety, sustainability and comfort of a car, the automotive industry is particularly called to prove its ability to make necessary innovations available in order to accelerate its pace to come out of the crisis. Consequently the Green Car is assuming a prominent role in the current debate.
Various power train concepts are currently under discussion for the Green Car including extremely optimised internal combustion engines, hybrid drives and battery-electric traction. Electrical cars are the most appealing option because they are free of local emissions and provide the opportunity to use primary energy from sources other than crude oil for transport. Well to wheel analysis show that their green-house gas emissions can be rated negligibly small if electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar is used. The mass introduction of electrical cars, however, is still a few years down the road, given the necessity to completely rethink the vehicle's concept: Novel solutions are needed for energy storage, traction, range extension, energy efficiency, power control and the overall system integration. All these are topics of advanced industrial research. Fatally, it is just the industrial research departments doing such work that in times of crisis have to fear to sustain budget cuts.
The promotion of Green Cars, in particular the electrical vehicle, has to rely on joint commitments by the industry and the public authorities. In terms of the electrical vehicle, first steps towards such public private partnership were recently taken by EPoSS, the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration. Starting with an expert workshop on smart systems for the electrica vehicle carried out together with the European Commission in June 2008, EPoSS systematically built-up a basis and provided essential support to the Green Cars Initiative as part of the European Economic Recovery Plan.

Competition Car Suspension

The wheel and the axle are not quite as old as the average hill but they still go back a bit. The path from a slice of tree trunk to an FI rear is a long one, well worthy of a story ail to itself, but we shall be more concerned here with ail the complexities of holding it on the vehicle, controlling how it does its job and utilising the small area where it touches the road to the very ultimate. In a word: suspension.
In the early stages of the evolutionary path suspension did not, of course, exist. It was sufficient that man had devised a means to transport, however laboriously, objects that had hitherto been immovable. But war and sport (the latter often a thinly disguised derivative of the former) were incentives to rapid progress. The Romans were a shining example. The Legions had carts and the Colosseum had chariot racing, without doubt the Formula One of the day. Neither appear to have used suspension but the strong metal-tyred spoked wheel had already appeared in the form it would still be taking 2000 years later on the horse drawn English brewery drays of the 20th century.
Why bother to explain or illustrate the past at ail? Because nothing happens in a vacuum. Everybody except the first to do something (often much further back than one migh suspect) is copying to some degree, even if unknowingly. History has an extraordinary number of instances of major inventions made by different people in different parts of the world at about the same time, within milli-seconds of each other if you think in cosmic terms, that is in millions of years. Bitter are the disputes and accusations within science and industry when this happens. So it is that a glance back (in no way totally comprehensive) will hopefully show how history and the designers it left behind laid the groundwork. What died and what survived is a fascinating insight into the state of the art not readily obtainable in any other way.

Modern Engine Tuning

First published in 1989 as Tuning New Generation Engines, this best-selling book has been fully updated to include the latest developments in four-stroke engine technology in the era of pollution controls, unleaded and low-lead petrol, and electronic management systems. It explains in non-technical language how modern engines can be modified for road and club competition use, with the emphasis on power and economy, and how electronic management systems and emission controls work.
Preface
Four stroke engines have entered a new era; an era of pollution controls, unleaded and low lead fuel, and electronic engine management systems. For the engine and car enthusiast the situation may appear perplexing and confusing, in fact some engine tuners pine for the “good old days”. They feel that high performance and engine tinkering is now on the way out. This couldn’t be further from the truth; performance is here. Modern engines offer a greater potential for performance and economy than those of previous times.
Today’s engines feature better cylinder heads with large valves, and port and combustion chamber designs far superior to those available in the past. Many feature fuel injection, along with high How inlet and exhaust manifolds. Ignition systems able to provide precisely timed combustion for more power and efficiency. Lightweight, but stronger pistons, connecting rods and crankshafts which give greater reliability and allow higher rpm. Small turbos and sophisticated management systems have allowed high power outputs without turbo lag. The list could go on, for from whatever aspect present day engines are examined, the irrefutable conclusion has to be that these engines provide a fine base for performance-oriented development.
In this book I have set out to show the enthusiast how electronic controls and emission controls work, and how current engines can be modified for performance with cam, exhaust and carburation changes, and still pass emission inspections in those lands with such requirements. The end result is a book which I believe outlines in a non-technical manner simple and inexpensive tuning modifications for road and occasional club competition engines, with the emphasis on economy and useable street power. I am sure that you will find this publication an informative and valuable tuning aid.

Diesel Engine Reference Book

This book was originally commissioned in order to provide a modern version of Pounder's Diesel Engine Principles and Practice and as an addition to the publisher's series of reference books. In the event, it has ended up as a new book, since all the chapters have been rewritten, although some include still valid material from the old book. The engines covered include all types manufactured in Europe, the US A and Japan. The authors of the various chapters have been drawn not only from the UK but from Europe and the USA and include many widely-known authorities. Several new chapters have been added to cover the developments of the twenty-two years since the last edition of Pounder's book.
Thermal and mechanical loads in cylinder heads, pistons and liners have increased dramatically because power from the same cylinder size has about doubled. The development of new cooling methods and new design techniques has been necessary to enable such higher loadings to be sustained. Therefore new chapters on 'Thermal Loading' and on 'Pistons, Rings and Liners' have
been included.
The increasing worldwide concern with the control of unpleasant smoke and harmful emissions from the exhaust outlets of vehicle engines and also with the control of the noise level, has resulted in legislation to limit smoke, emissions and noise and in the setting up of standard test methods of measurement in several countries, of which the USA was the first. These developments are explained fully in the chapters on 'Exhaust Smoke Measurement and Regulation', 'Exhaust Emissions' and 'Automotive Engine Noise'. The need to improve performance whether as regards power output or as regards lower fuel consumption or preferably both, though they are not always found together, has led to research into other engine systems to find out their potential. This research is covered in the chapter on 'Compound and Other Engine Systems'.

Advanced Control Engineering provides a complete course in control engineering for undergraduates of all technical disciplines. Starting with a basic overview of elementary control theory this text quickly moves on to a rigorous examination of more advanced and cutting edge date aspects such as robust and intelligent control, including neural networks and genetic algorithms.
With examples from aeronautical, marine and many other types of engineering, Roland Burns draws on his extensive teaching and practical experience presents the subject in an easily understood and applied manner. Control Engineering is a core subject in most technical areas.
Problems in each chapter, numerous illustrations and free Matlab files on the accompanying website are brought together to provide a valuable resource for the engineering student and lecturer alike.
