I have been lucky to have worked on several prestigious car projects, ranging from Ford Transit to Aston Martin DB7, Although my general interest was on Ihe materials side, I can't help but appreciate the advance that electronics have made. Welcome to the "sophisticated car electronics."
Take one subject, engines. The days of being in a position to correct a problem under the bonnet are now a thing of the past. Problems are now detected via advanced electronic engine management Systems, and they are analyzed and decoded to give the reason for the problem.
Easy!
The subject of electronics governs nearly ail cars. Transmission Systems on several cars today have a "fly-by-wirev system that governs gear change, similar to that found on Formula One (FI) cars today. This is no accident. FI cars are seen by the public as being on the cutting edge of vehicle technology. Car companies that operate today are multinational and cover the globe and a range of car types. Audi/VW, for instance, is one company that people see only one part of.
The generail public may not know that the same company also controls Lamborghini, Bentley, SE AT, and Skoda. And for the last 5 years. Audi has run and won (nearly) every LeMans race. Car buyers want to see those evolving performance technologies transferred to their fourseater saloon, and they are willing to pay a premium for that privilege.
Advanced electronic sensors are used to give the driver information about the radio station, the CD track, the bass/treble control, and the parts of the car where music may be required and at what volume. Tire pressures are monitored to make sure that the information is available to ihe driver. Interior temperature control is monitored for the comfort of ail passengers.
The list of the rules electronics plays in vehicle manufacturing today is endless.
Gavin Harper is the perfect guide and offers the reader an excellent overview on the topic of sophisticated electronics. 1 first met Gavin about a year ago and was impressed by his level of knowledge and motivation. Gavin has since been introduced to several high-tech specialist
motor manufacturers who have requested his help. I cannot praise him highly enough.
1 wish him ail the best with his endeavours and feel privileged to have known him. Stephen Scarborough
