HYDROLOGY - A SCIENCE OF NATURE

Hydrology is a little of all of these disciplines, combined. And as hard as it is to understand why humans don't pay more attention to water, it is even more difficult to understand how, at the beginning of a new century, on a planet of over 6 billion people, a sixth of them are without access to clean drinking water, and nearly half lack access to adequate sanitation.
This book does not pretend to try to propose solutions for all these problems. Instead, its purpose is to give a reasonably comprehensive overview of this very broad and complex field, giving priority to the water cycle, its various components and its interactions with the environment in which it develops and interacts. As much as possible, the authors have tried to illustrate their remarks with concrete examples and references as an aid to comprehension. Because this book is designed for university students as well as engineers, scientists and anyone with an interest in the management of our water resources, one of our goals is to look beyond a purely scientific discussion of hydrology to the fact that mankind needs to wake up to the urgency of the situation in which we find ourselves. Because without water, life will end.
